Title-pages with the ink stamp of the Oxford and Cambridge Club (no other library markings); front endpapers with the ownership signature of the English historian and civil servant Rohan Butler (1917-1996), historical adviser to the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs; mild toning to the contents, loss to the corners of a few leaves, but generally quite clean and sound, firmly bound. The Marquise du Deffand (1696-1780) was a notable eighteenth-century salonniere and patron of the arts.
