Pierre de Bernis (1715-1794), cardinal and diplomat, was an intimate of Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour, French ambassador to Rome, and a “renowned voluptuary” who played a prominent role in the life and memoirs (Histoire de ma vie) of Giacomo Casanova.
