HISTORIE CRONOLOGICHE DELL 'ORIGINE DEGL'ORDINIE MILITARI E DI TUTTE LE RELIGIONI CAVALLERESCHE.....Venice: Presso Combi & LaNou. 1692.  Thick folio.  2 volumes bound in 1.  (20), 432; (2), [433]-866pp.  Double column text.  Profusely illustrated with an allegorical frontispiece and a full page portrait of the author, both by Giuseppe Juster.  Text with 36 copper engraved plates, mostly 3/4 page portraits of famous men , in the full regalia (habit) of their orders.  Additionally there are 147 text woodcut within elaborate borders depicting coats-of-arms and emblems of the various orders of knighthood  and chivalry. The first title page printed in red & black.  Original vellum, top of spine with manuscript title.  The front cover is stamped with the gilt initials "B F V L".  Vellum with old dirt soiling.  Internally text and plates are clean and crisp.

This is the second edition, revised and greatly expanded, compared to the first edition of 1672 (one volume in 4to.).  The key work to this date on the history of the military, equestrian, and chivalric orders of all nations - all throughout Europe including England, and also Japan, 3 listings for North America (in 1692!) including Peru and "the island of Florida", and a section for 5 European women's orders.  An encyclopedia on this subject, with much historical and bibliographical information.  Brunet II, 1618.  Lipperheide O 10.
