Ezra from Aardvark today offers a very nice copy of M.A. Leeson’s masterful History of Montana, 1885.

Leeson, M.A. (editor) and D.J. Stewart. HISTORY OF MONTANA 1739-1885: HISTORY OF ITS DISCOVERY AND SETTLEMENT, SOCIAL AND COMMERCIAL PROGRESS, MINES AND MINERS, AGRICULTURE AND STOCK-GROWING, CHURCHES, SCHOOLS AND SOCIETIES, INDIANS AND INDIAN WARS, VIGILANTES, COURTS OF JUSTICE, NEWSPAPER PRESS, NAVIGATION, RAILROADS AND STATISTICS, WITH HISTORIES OF COUNTIES, CITIES, VILLAGES AND MINING CAMPS; ALSO PERSONAL REMINISCENCES OF GREAT HISTORIC VALUE, VIEWS CHARACTERISTIC OF THE TERRITORY IN OUR OWN TIME, AND PORTRAITS OF PIONEERS AND REPRESENTATIVE MEN IN THE PROFESSIONS AND TRADES. ILLUSTRATED. Chicago, Illinois: Warner, Beers & Company, 1885. Quarto, maroon half-leather over pebbled cloth, ruled in gilt chain. Recently tightened and spruced up by our professional conservator. Rubbing from old label residue to front pastedown endpaper. Interior solid and intact, including foldout territorial map.

Massive and comprehensive history of Montana Territory expanded from biographical sketches by D.J. Stewart and theTerritorial Historical Company, and greatly expanded by the massive corralling of information by M.A. Leeson into this nearly1400-page work. "This volume contains a greater and more varied history than was ever before embodied in a work on the teritories; it was compiled with great care, and the personal sketches were collated and rewritten". Very Good Plus. Leather-bound.

"...The first part is devoted to the general history of the Territory, and may be said to embrace every name and item connectedwith the Territory as a whole. This part of the work is based almost entirely on official reports, public records, written statements of travelers and pioneers (founded on daily journals of their travels and experiences) and oral statements of early settlers."

"The second part is devoted to the histories of the counties. This portion of the work is based on records (some of which were exhumed, so to speak, while others were found in well-kept record books) and reminiscences. Commercial, military and political enterprises are detailed, nothing which might be thought worthy of mention is omitted, and thus every name and deed are entwined with the history of the county.”

A canvassing book, sold on a subscription basis, with numerous available “uncharges” if for instance, the buyer wanted a full page illustration of the family homestead.

                                                                                                                    $1,950
