MAGAZINE. Vols. XXII & XXIII: January 1843-December 1843. Philadelphia:
George R. Graham, 1843. First Edition. Two volumes bound in one,
publisher's full tree calf leather with gilt-lettered red morocco spine
labels. Illustrated with 38 steel engravings, 5 of which are
hand-colored. Illustrations include fashion plates as well as portraits
of Longfellow and William Cullen Bryant. First appearance in print of
THE CONQUEROR WORM, Poe's poem about human mortality and the
inevitability of death, as well as 4 minor pieces by Poe. Also with
contributions by James Fenimore Cooper, Henry Longfellow, James Russell
Lowell, and others. Attractive railroad bookplate of Robert Heysham
Sayre (1824-1907), vice president and chief engineer of the Lehigh
Valley Railroad. Internally clean, binding quite nice with just a little
fraying along the spine edges with a short split at the top. Near Fine.
