CLARKE, Milton and Lewis. NARRATIVES OF THE SUFFERINGS OF LEWIS AND
MILTON CLARKE, SONS OF A SOLDIER OF THE REVOLUTION, DURING A CAPTIVITY
OF MORE THAN TWENTY YEARS AMONG THE SLAVEHOLDERS OF KENTUCKY, ONE OF THE
SO CALLED CHRISTIAN STATES OF NORTH AMERICA. Dictated by Themselves.
Boston: Bela Marsh, 1846. Second Edition. Publisher's green
blind-stamped cloth lettered in gilt; 144 pages. First published in
1845, this edition is enlarged with additional material and two
portraits: an engraved portrait frontispiece of Lewis Clarke with an
engraved portrait of Milton Clarke inserted in the text at the beginning
of his section. The Clarke brothers dictated their narrative to J. C.
Lovejoy, who notes in his preface that "it gave me a new and more vivid
impression of the wrongs of Slavery than I had ever before felt" (page
3). Their mother was a slave impregnated by her white owner. The final
section of the book includes questions asked of Lewis Clark with his
answers, such as: "Have you ever known a slave mother to kill her own
children?", "What do they do with old slaves, who are past labor?", and
" Do not slaves often say that they love their masters very much?"
BLOCKSON 9751; HOWES C-457. Ink names of authors on rear endpaper and
pastedown, likely in an owner's hand. Minor spotting or soiling; light
wear, primarily to corners and spine ends. Very Good. (#020846)        $500
