First Edition. Two volumes bound in one, publisher's gilt-lettered 
polished tan calf leather and marbled boards with matching leather 
corners. Illustrated with 48 steel engravings, 2 of which are 
hand-colored, with scores of several songs, mostly printed on blue 
paper. First appearance in print of Poe's FIFTY SUGGESTIONS which 
include the following: "As far as I can understand the 'loving our 
enemies,' it implies the hating our friends" and "Children are never too 
tender to be whipped:-- like tough beefsteaks, the more you beat them 
the more tender they become." Also with contributions by Bayard Taylor 
and others. Text and plates quite clean; binding firm. Very Good.
