XXVI & XXVII: Jan. 1845-Dec. 1845. Philadelphia: George R. Graham, 1845.
First Edition. Two volumes bound in one, publisher's gilt-lettered black
morocco leather and marbled boards with matching leather corners.
Illustrated with steel engravings, 7 of them by Carl Bodmer, mostly of
Native Americans. First appearance in print of Poe's THE IMP OF THE
PERVERSE and THE SYSTEM OF DR. TARR AND PROF. FETHER as well as a
profile of Poe by James Russell Lowell with a steel-engraved portrait of
Poe and a review of Poe's book TALES. Also with contributions by James
Fenimore Cooper, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, James Russell Lowell,
Bayard Taylor, and others. Ex-Library marked withdrawn, a few pages of
text lacking but not from any significant piece; text and plates quite
clean. Binding is broken with the text block loose in the covers, large
