Photographic Record of 70th Infantry from U.S. Camps to Europe, 1917-19 -
Scarce; 70th WWI Regiment

A photographic record of an American soldier’s experience of service in the
70th Infantry Regiment. Photos depict the soldier’s travels to U.S.
destinations, army camps to the 462nd Air Squadron in France (Special
Orders Document Enclosed). 260, 2 ¼” x 3 ¼” photos begin with scenes shot
from a boat entering NY harbor apparently returning from war in France.
Photographic scenes progress in this general order: NY Harbor, Long Beach,
NY; Kelly Field, TX; 48th Air Squadron, Mineola and Hempstead, L.I., NY;
multiple locations in France, crashed planes, Morocco, Monte Carlo, London,
Edinburgh, Camp Pontanezen, France and Weissenthurm, Germany. Photos range
in size to include 1 ¾” x 2 ½”. 2 ¼” x 3 ¼”, and 2 ½” x 4 ¼”. Most photos
are clear with about 10% unclear. Half the white captions are difficult to
read. Some require a 8X lupe and others are missing or faded away.
Photographic records of the WWI 70th Infantry are scarce. The album appears
to begin with the soldier’s return in 1919 while his experience in war-time
France is shown in the back. Ephemera includes orders to report to Air
Squadron in France dated April 28, 1918, an arm patch and a flyer for a
musical produced by members of the 462nd Aero Squadron. See next to last
photo. Item #3140

Verga, Giovanni; Lawrence, D. H. [Translator]
Little Novels of Sicily

New York: Thomas Seltzer, 1925. First Edition. Hardcover. A Very Good + or
perhaps better copy of the first American Edition, first printing (minor
rubbing to the spine ends and to each board's leading corners) with the
spine label in quite nice condition, in a Very Good spine-sunned dust
jacked with a bit of chipping and some rubbing. Best-known for his great
works "I Malavoglia" ["The House by the Medlar-tree"] (1881), considered to
be his best novel, a tale which centers on a family of fishermen who work
and live in Aci Trezza, a small Sicilian village near Catania, and his last
major work "Mastro-don Gesualdo" ["Master Don Guesaldo"] (1889), a novel
which deals with Gesualdo Motta who focused his life on his assets instead
of on personal relationships and who was consequently crushed by the empty
life he created. Each of these works is widely regarded as a masterpiece.
"Little Novels of Sicily" is a collection of Verga's short stories and
contains the following: His Reverence (Il reverendo), So Much for the King
(Cos'è il re), Don Licciu Papa (Don Licciu papa), The Mystery Play (Il
mistero), Malaria (Malaria) [one of the earliest literary depictions of the
disease malaria], The Orphans (Gli orfani), Property (La roba), Story of
St. Joseph's Ass (Storia dell'asino di S. Giuseppe), Black Bread (Pane
nero), and The Gentry (I galantuomini), Liberty (Libertà), and Across the
Sea (Di là del mare). While Verga's reputation as an author grew slowly
during his life, modern critics have considered him to be one of the
greatest of all Italian novelists. Very good + / very good. Item #3449
