[William Combe; Thomas Rowlandson, illus.:] The History of Johnny Quae Genus, the Little Foundling of the late Doctor Syntax: A Poem, by the Author of the Three Tours. London: R. Ackermann, 1822. First edition in book form. Tall 8vo (25.5 cm) in early/original(?) orange ribbed cloth decorated in blind and lettered in gilt, yellow coated endpapers, top page edges gilt; later protective mylar jacket and oilcloth slipcase; [4], 267, [1] pp.; with 24 hand-colored aquatints by Rowlandson (complete). Tooley 413; Abbey: Life 268.

The last of the authentic Doctor Syntax books and the final collaboration of Combe and Rowlandson. A tall copy in the cloth binding, uncommon thus. Binding with front and rear boards detached, minor soil and spotting; the contents Very Good or better, with some light toning and offsetting from the plates to the text leaves, a few small stains and touches of soiling. Front paste-down with an unidentified armorial bookplate bearing the motto "Caesar Auguste."
