[Madeleine-Angelique Poisson de Gomez:] Anecdotes, ou Histoire Secrette de la Maison Ottomane. Amsterdam: par la Compagnie, MDCCXXII [1722]. First edition. Four volumes (complete), 12mo (13.5 cm), in early/period speckled calf, gilt-tooled spines and spine labels.

A purported history of the Ottoman sultans, usually attributed to Madeleine-Angelique de Gomez (1684-1770), the wife of an impecunious Spanish nobleman, who took up writing to escape destitution. The work is sometimes attributed to Nicolas Baudot. Very uncommon in either case.

Bindings with some rubbing and wear, partial loss to the spine label of vol. I, some cracking to the joints but the boards are secure; the contents very good or better: the occasional small spot here and there, but very clean, bright and crisp, firmly bound. The versos of the title-pages bear the elaborate armorial bookplates of Sir Clement Cottrell (1686-1758), Master of the Ceremonies during the reigns of Queen Anne, King George I and King George II, as well as vice-president of the Society of Antiquaries.
