The Gentleman's Magazine, and Historical Chronicle. Volume LI [51]. For the Year MDCCLXXXI [1781]. London: Printed by J. Nichols, for D. Henry, [1781]. Twelve monthly issues (Jan.-Dec.) plus the supplement, volume title, indices and preface. Thick 8vo in early/period calf-backed marbled boards, gilt-lettered morocco spine label; iv + 633 + [15] pp.; with in-text charts and tables, woodcut illustrations, plus 15 copper-engraved plates and maps, seven of which are folding (complete).

With extensive contemporary coverage of events related to the AMERICAN WAR OF INDEPENDENCE, including:
	- Proceedings of the British Army in Virginia: "An account… of the proceedings of the detachment sent by Gen. Clinton to Virginia under the command of Brig. Gen. [BENEDICT] ARNOLD..."
	- Extract of a Letter from Brig. Gen. Arnold to Sir H. Clinton… sent from New York, May 18; Copy of a Letter from Brig. Gen. Arnold to his Excellency the Commander in Chief, dated Sound off Plumb Island, Sept. 8, 1781.

	- An important early account of the DEATH OF CAPTAIN COOK, in a lengthy two-part review of Journal of Captain Cook's last Voyage to the Pacific Ocean, on Discovery...

Binding with rubbing and wear, bumping to the corners, chipping to the spine head, some cracking to the joints but both boards are secure; contents with occasional browning and light spotting to the text leaves and a few of the plates, otherwise quite clean and sound, firmly bound. Front paste-down with the bookplate of Marius Nielsen (engraved by Johannes Britze).
