PRESCOTT, W. H. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS). Lynn [MA], 29 August
1856. One-page AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED. In full: "My Dear Sir, I regret,
as I have always regretted, that there is no portrait in existence of
Col. Prescott, who unfortunately lived and died before the age of
daguerreotyping-- which has given immortality to so many mortals."
Interesting comment on the fairly young art of photography by Prescott
who is considered to be the first American scientific historian. His
works included THE HISTORY OF THE REIGN OF FERDINAND AND ISABELLA THE
CATHOLIC (1837), THE HISTORY OF THE CONQUEST OF MEXICO (1843), and A
HISTORY OF THE CONQUEST OF PERU (1847). The city of Prescott in Arizona
was named in his honor. Feathering to the ink in his signature, the
remainder of the ink clear. Near Fine. (#020991)     $100
