EDGAR ALLAN POE. First appearances in print of five works by Poe: The Mask of the Red Death. A Fantasy and [a review of] Twice-Told Tales by Nathaniel Hawthorne, in Graham's Lady's and Gentleman's Magazine, vol. XX, no. 5, May, 1842; An Appendix of Autographs, Graham's, XX.1, January, 1842; [a review of] Zanoni by Edward Bulwer-Lytton (attributed to), Graham's, XX.6, June, 1842; A Valentine. To — — —, Sartain's Union Magazine of Literature and Art, IV.3, March, 1849.

Four separate issues, disbound, some page-gatherings loose or coming loose; leaves with various degrees of toning and browning, scattered foxing, occasional light damp-stains.

When a revised version of the first work was printed in 1845, the title was changed to the now standard "The Masque of the Red Death." The last work is an acrostic puzzle poem. Poe was an editor of Graham's Magazine from April 1841 until May 1842. Also included in these issues are works by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow ("The Goblet of Life") and James Russell Lowell ("Farewell").
