American Abolitionist Henry Ward Beecher -Victorian Carte de Visite.
Henry Ward Beecher [1813-1887] was one of the more entertaining
figures in a century known for being chock full of such people, and is
a perfect example of a man whose life necessitates the use of the
phrase, “Well, it’s complicated”. Wikipedia contributes my favorite
one-sentence summation of his life when it begins its’ article on him
by stating- “Henry Ward Beecher was an American Congregationalist
clergyman, social reformer, and speaker, known for his support of the
abolition of slavery, his emphasis on God's love, and his 1875
adultery trial”.
The brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe, Beecher variously championed
laws that would give women the legal right to vote and remove
everybody’s ability to legally drink. He was a staunch Abolitionist
who raised money to send rifles to fellow Abolitionists in Kansas
during the ‘Bloody Kansas’ period, musing that a rifle was more useful
there than “a hundred Bibles”. He advocated for Darwin’s Theory of
Evolution in the Animal Kingdom and championed Social Darwinism in the
Kingdom of Man, believing that “captains of industry” were the natural
leaders of Society. He supported migrants and opposed the Chinese
Exclusion Act, while being staunchly anti-union, preaching that "Man
cannot live by bread alone but the man who cannot live on bread and
water is not fit to live," and "If you are being reduced, go down
boldly into poverty".
And then there were the issues of his rumored multiple mistresses and
a series of free-love adultery trials that the national press obsessed
over for months. But that’s a story for another day. As we said at the
beginning, when it came to Henry Ward Beecher, well- it’s complicated.
Carte de Visite. 2.5”x4”. Minor soil, light wear. $45, plus $3 shipping.
