One of the great names in banking and finance in early California history.  Hellman, a Jewish immigrant born in Bavariain 1842 arrived in Los Angeles in 1859.  He became the first commercial bank in Los Angeles, which eventually becamethe Farmers and Merchants Bank.  In 1890 he moved to San Francisco continuing with other banking ventures, includingtaking over the Nevada Bank of San Francisco as well as eventually serving as president or director of 17 banks in the state.After his death his family continued in banking, creating Wells Fargo Bank.  He was considered the leading financier of thePacific Coast.
