Four American 1940-41 14-Year Old Girl Sketchbooks of City Women
A set of enchanting small sketchbooks made by 14-year old Grace Marmor
who we believe lived in New York City at the time. The pencil sketches
are mainly of women, with some notes of the date, and a short
editorial or descriptive comments, such as, “Undecided”, “Wow!”,
“Trying to make an impression in her very odd gown”, and “The Type”. A
fourth book has a variety of subjects. The sketches are dated between
1940 and 1941. Grace Marmor was born in 1926 and later became a
Professor Emeritus in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at
Rutgers University, Newark where she was a member of the faculty for
47 years. These sketchbooks are from her recently-dispersed estate.
Four 4”x6” sketch pads; 49 pages, light soil, minor wear; 83 pages,
some soil and wear, top edge rough; 20 pages (plus additional blank
pages), some soil and wear, 1 page detached; 18 pages, a variety of
subjects in a rougher style, quite worn with pages detaching, tape
stains, soil, and so on. $150
