[FILLMORE, Millard] SCHLOSSER, F. C. HISTORY OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY 
AND OF THE NINETEENTH TILL THE OVERTHROW OF THE FRENCH EMPIRE WITH 
PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO MENTAL CULTIVATION AND PROGRESS. Millard 
Fillmore's Copy Signed by Him. London: Chapman & Hall, 1844. First 
Edition. Volume III (of 8). Octavo (5-1/2" x 8-1/2") bound in 
publisher's brown blind-stamped cloth, gilt lettering on the spine, xvi, 
503 pages. SIGNED and dated 7 June 1856 vertically on the front 
pastedown by the thirteenth President of the United States while in 
office. Fillmore has also written the notations J - 6 (which he crossed 
out) and D - 1 in the upper right corner of the title page, notations he 
used on books in his personal library to denote the room and shelf where 
the book was stored. Some cracking to front hinge but cover very tight. 
Clean inside and out, Near Fine.
Millard Fillmore was an avid reader and book collector. Fillmore 
established the first White House Library. When he moved from 
Washington, he relocated his library to Buffalo, NY. After his death in 
1874, his large library was sold by his son. (#018014)     $1,000
