1906/07 Penn-Mont Mining & Milling Montana Stock Letters
On August 10, 1906 Clarence V. Lichty of Lancaster, Pennsylvania,
apparently the lead agent for the Penn-Mont Mine of Elliston, Montana,
writes to Benjamin Stoner of Hallem, Pennsylvania, enclosing a set of
carbons of letters praising the Penn-Mont mine; on August 27 he writes
giving glowing updates on the mine, and enclosing an order form for
stock; an undated handwritten letter from Stoner to Lichty on Stoner &
Bro. letterhead explains that he has bought too much stock and he and
Mrs. Stoner are being kept up at night with worry about their
financial situation and could Mr. Lichty please buy back the stock; On
November 7 Lichty writes to Stoner that he is sorry to hear the stock
is causing worries, but that he has no money presently to buy the
stock back with; on December 21 Lichty writes that he is enclosing a
note for $375, and will try to sell the stock for Stoner; on March 29,
1907 Lichty writes that having gotten the $375 back Mr. Stoner has
made a profit of $25 on the deal, and he is sending a copy of a letter
from New York with good news about the Penn-Mont mine (included in
this lot) and would like to advise Mr. Stoner to buy more shares; on
April 18, 1907 Mr. Lichty writes on the letterhead of the Penn-Mont
Mining Co. that he has a great, no-lose deal for Mr. Stoner on shares
in the mine. From a small collection of correspondence of Benjamin
Stoner of Hellam, Pennsylvania, who invested in a variety of mining
and other speculative stocks in the early 1900s.
This lot consists of- 6 8.5x11 letters; 5-page carbon typescript of
mine report; 5.5x9 letter from Stoner; two 6x3.5 order forms for
stock; 8.5x11 Penn-Mont Mining Co. 6-page prospectus. Letters &
typescript all in good condition, folded; one of the order slips has
soil and chips; the prospectus has soil, wear, and corrosion along
both edges. $65, plus $3 shipping.
