Publisher's green cloth with gilt-lettered spine; xi, [i], 437 pages.
Edited with a preface by Adams and containing letters and papers by John
Quincy Adams, Timothy Pickering, Alexander Hamilton, Rufus King,
Gouverneur Morris, and others. This book introduced Henry Adams as an
American historian. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the first
blank: "Miss Catherine L. Howard/with the regards of/Henry Adams/Jany
1878." BAL 8; HOWES A-51. Scarce to find signed. Old dampstain along
margin of signed page and throughout the text but mostly confined to the
bottom corner and not very obtrusive. Very Good or better.
Henry Adams (1838-1918, American historian and author, was a descendent
of John Adams and John Quincy Adams. His posthumously published memoir,
THE EDUCATION OF HENRY ADAMS, was awarded the 1919 Pulitzer Prize.
