[John Oldmixon:] Arcana Gallica: or, The Secret History of France, for the Last Century. Shewing, by what Steps the French Ministers destroy'd the Liberties of that Nation in General, and the Protestant Religion in Particular. With a View of the Distractions and Civil Wars during the two Minorities in that Period. Collected from the most Authentick Authorities, never before Printed in France or England. By the Author of The Secret History of Europe. London: Printed for A. Bell, at the Cross-Keys in Cornwel, N. Cliff and D. Jackson, at the Bible and Three Crowns in Cheapside, MDCCXIV [1714]. First edition, 8vo (20 cm), recently rebound in paneled calf, gilt-lettered morocco spine label; [8] + 509 + [19] pp. ESTC T116391.

One of several works by John Oldmixon (1673-1742) in which "the designs of papists and Stuarts against the protestant religion and the British constitution were exposed" (DNB). Oldmixon was a prolific and argumentative historian and pamphleteer and an uncompromising old Whig, famous for the bitterness and longevity of his quarrels with political and literary foes such as Samuel Johnson, who described him as the "lowest of all human begins, a scribbler for a party," and Alexander Pope, who immortalized him in his Dunciad.

Contents toned, intermittent browning and offsetting, scattered spotting, a few page corners bumped, else clean and sound, firmly bound in a fresh and attractive modern binding.
