Assassination. The Death of Sir Henry Wilson and the Tragedy of Ireland
By Rex Taylor. Published by Hutchinson of London in 1961.
“On 22nd June 1922 Field Marshall Sir Henry Wilton, Chief of the
Imperial Staff, was shot dead on the steps of his London home by two
members of the Irish Republican Army. Wilton was one of the most hated
figures in the Catholic South. He was also a great soldier and
statesman, and national hero to the English. His assassination
increased the strain of Anglo-Irish relations to the breaking point.
In this account of his death and of the subsequent trial and execution
of the two men held responsible for it, Rex Taylor has vividly
re-created one of the most dramatic episodes in modern British
history. With his widely acclaimed biography of Michael Collins the
author has already shown a remarkable understanding of the
complexities of Anglo-Irish history. In ‘Assassination’ he has
produced another brilliant study of a time of great drama and
distress”. Published by Hutchinson of London in 1961.
Hardcover, 5.5x8.5, 224 pages, black & white illustrations, dust
jacket. Jacket with wear and stains on the back flap, the back cover
of the book also has some light stains. $40, plus $3 shipping.
