[Jonathan Swift:] A Tale of a Tub. Written for the Universal Improvement of Mankind. To which is Added, An Account of a Battel between the Antient and Modern Books in St. James's Library. [London?: s.n.], Anno MDCCXI [1711]. Small duodecimo (15 cm) in full early/period calf, rebacked, with gilt-lettered spine label; 310 pp. Teerink-Scouten 224; ESTC N13639.

According to ESTC, "this is the first printed of four small duodecimo editions dated 1711 and the only one of these editions certain to be correctly dated; the other 1711 duodecimo piracies descend from it." With an initial advertisement leaf; "Vein" on p.69, line 3 from the foot; and "uicely" on p.207, line 5 from foot.

In addition to the Tale of a Tub and Battel[sic] of the Books, the volume also contains "A Discourse Concerning the Mechanical Operation of the Spirit," the last two works with separate title-pages, though the pagination and register are continuous. Binding with some rubbing, wear to the edges, bumping to the corners; contents with mild age-toning, occasional light browning, a few scattered spots, otherwise clean and sound, firmly bound. Front paste-down with the early booklabel of Samuel Staniforth.
