Maurice, comte de Saxe; [Sir William Fawcett (trans.)]: Reveries, or Memoirs upon the Art of War by Field-Marshal Count Saxe. Illustrated with Copper-plates. To which are added some original Letters, upon various Military Subjects, wrote by the Count to the late King of Poland, and M. de Folard, which were never before made publick: Together with His Reflections upon the Propagation of the Human Species. Translated from the French. London: Printed for J. Nourse, at the Lamb, opposite Katherine-Street, in the Strand, MDCCLVII [1757]. First edition in English, 4to (26.5 cm), in full period/early calf, gilt-lettered morocco spine label; [2], x, 195, [1] pp., with 41 engraved plates by Isaac Basire on 34 sheets, most of which are folding. ESTC T97717.

Binding with rubbing, wear to the corners, some scuffs and abrasions, the joints cracked, with the front board held by one of the cords; the front (blank) free-endpaper detached but present, the contents with occasional light spotting, the fore-edges of two folding plates a bit soiled where they protrude slightly from the text block, one plate with an old repair to the verso, a few short edge-tears, otherwise quite clean and sound. Partially removed armorial bookplate on the front paste-down, front free-endpapers with ink annotations, the signature of Octavius Sturges, Sept. 11 1847, and the elaborate armorial bookplate of Thomas Francis Fremantle.

"Maurice, Count of Saxony (1696–1750) was a notable soldier, officer and a famed military commander of the eighteenth century. The illegitimate son of Augustus II the Strong, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony, he initially served in the Army of the Holy Roman Empire, then the Imperial Army, before finally entering French service. De Saxe became a Marshal and even Marshal General of France. He is best known for his deeds in the War of the Austrian Succession and especially for his decisive victory at the Battle of Fontenoy" (Wikipedia).
