WITH GREAT BRITAIN. Millard Fillmore's Copy Signed by Him. Boston: Wells 
and Lilly, 1826. First Edition. Octavo (5-1/4" x 8-3/4") bound in 
contemporary calf leather, recently and attractively rebacked in calf 
preserving the original gilt-lettered morocco spine label; xii, 379, [3] 
pages. SIGNED "M. Fillmore/Buffalo/N. York" on the front pastedown by 
the thirteenth President of the United States and SIGNED again on the 
title page as "Millard Fillmore" with the notation B - 1, a notation he 
used on books in his personal library to denote the room and shelf where 
the book was stored. Bemis & Griffin, GUIDE TO THE DIPLOMATIC HISTORY OF 
THE UNITED STATES, 1775-1921: "The first historical study of American 
diplomacy"; HOWES L582; SABIN 42796. The first attempt at a systematic 
diplomatic history of the United States, including a chapter on the 
Louisiana Purchase and an appendix listing all American treaties to 
date. A significant early study of American diplomacy, enhanced by two 
signatures of an American president. Occasional slight browning but 
overall a clean, attractively bound, Fine copy.

Millard Fillmore was an avid reader and book collector. Fillmore 
established the first White House Library. When he moved from 
Washington, he relocated his library to Buffalo, NY. After his death in 
1874, his large library was sold by his son. (#020247)     $2,500
