John Manners: Notes of an Irish Tour in 1846 : by Lord John Manners, M.P. New edition. Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1881. Small 8vo (17.5 cm) in original publisher's cloth; vi + 148 pp.

A rather rough copy, but a surprisingly uncommon book. Ex-library, with evidence of labels having been removed from the front cover and front paste-down, shelving numbers on spine foot, ink stamps on the verso of the title-page; spine darkened, rear inner hinge cracked, a few scattered light spots and touches of soiling. Loosely laid in is an illustrated Christmas card marking the centenary of the Shelbourne Hotel, Dublin, signed by, presumably, the manager. (Fun Wikipedia fact: "In the early 1900s, Alois Hitler, Jr., the elder half-brother of Adolf, worked in the hotel.")

Despite the fact that his account was written and first published at the height of the Irish Potato Famine, the author, in his preface, blithely hopes that his book "may afford a half an hour's amusement or, maybe, a useful suggestion to some who may this summer for the first time visit the Emerald Isle."
