The Merchant Shipper’s and Ocean Traveller’s Atlas. Fifth edition. Revised and enlarged. London: George Philip & Son, 1902. Large folio (48x35 cm./19x13.5 in.) in original publisher’s gilt-lettered cloth; [4] pp. (title-page, preface and table of contents), 9 pp. of index at the end, plus 16 full-color maps, 13 of which are double-page.

The maps: 1. The World - Mercator. 2. The English Channel. 3. North Sea, Baltic Sea, & Baltic Canal. 4. North Atlantic Ocean. 5. North Atlantic Western Parts, Boston and New York. 6. The North Channel, Firth of Clyde, Irish Sea, Saint George's Channel & Manchester Ship Canal. 7. Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. 8. Binding with damp-staining in the region of the spine, front and rear inner hinges nearly detached from the text block but the binding is holding and the maps are secured, rear free-endpaper detached but present; some damp-stain and evidence of old mildew on the reverse of the maps at the gutter, occasionally visible on the front (most noticeably on the Australasia map); light toning overall with a few small spots and light soiling to the margins; otherwise the maps are quite clean and sound. Front paste-down with the early owner’s signature of T. E. Lloyd, Wrexham, dated 12/6/03. Loosely laid in (folded) are two large blank cartographic charts, bearing the same owner’s signature.
