Robert Cotton, John Hayward: The Histories of the Lives and Raignes of Henry the Third, and Henry the Fourth. Kings of England. Written by Sr. Robert Cotton, and Sr. Iohn Hayward, Knights. London: Printed for William Sheares, and are to be sold at his Shop in Bedford-Street, in Coven-garden neere the new Exchange, at the signe of the Bible, an. 1642. First edition thus; 12mo (14.5 cm) in early/period polished calf; [2], 45, [15], 318 pp.; with two engraved portrait frontispieces. Wing C6494; ESTC R3965.

The first collected edition, two parts in one volume, with separate title pages and pagination for each. The first part, by Sir Robert Cotton, was originally published in 1627 as A short view of the long life and raigne of Henry the Third; the second part, by Sir John Hayward, was first published in 1599 as The historie of the life and raigne of Henry Fourth. Last text leaf with the early ownership signature (unsuccessfully obscured) of Ralph Taylor; front flyleaf with the later (1899) ownership signature of Richard Savage of Stratford-upon-Avon, longtime Secretary and Librarian of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust; old clipped bookseller's catalogue description affixed to the front paste-down. Front board detached; light browning to the leaves, a few occasional small spots and stains, else clean and sound.
