The Gentleman's Magazine: and Historical Chronicle. From January to June, 1816. Volume LXXXVI [86]. Part the First. London: Printed by John Nichols, Son, and Bentley, 1816. Six monthly issues (Jan.-June), plus the volume title, preface, supplement, and index. Thick 8vo (22 cm) in early/period calf-backed marbled boards, gilt-lettered morocco spine labels; iv + 668 pp.; with 13 engraved plates, one of which is folding (complete).

The PLATES include: the Globe Theatre and Bear Garden in Southwark, London; the Sea-bathing Infirmary at Margate; Map of the Antient Carteia near Gibraltar; Statues of two Raving and Melancholy Men, by Cibber, over the Entrance-gate of Bethlehem [Bedlam] Hospital; Antient Monument (supposed to be for the family of Brereton) in the Churchyard at Astbury; Distant View of Salisbury Cathedral with a group of Gypsies in the foreground; views of Headington Cross in Oxfordshire, the great Barn at Cholsey, the Church at Maiden Bradley, the Chapel of Ease at St. James's; plus more views and miscellaneous antiquities, curiosities, etc.

Other notable, curious and/or characteristic features, topics and essays include:
	- Several items related to Shakespeare's birthday and the bicentenary of his death, including descriptions of both the Globe and the Bear Garden theatres; a poetical "Impromptu on the Shakspearean[sic] Jubilee, respectfully inscribed to the Stewards and Committee of the Anniversary Festival"; a letter describing the Celebration of Shakspeare's Birth at Stratford-upon-Avon; and another from a less celebratory gentleman in Westfalton, Salop, who is "disgusted to see his [i.e., Shakespeare's] blossoms of ambrosial and purest bloom loaded, stuffed, and daubed with the trash and trumpery of certain creatures calling themselves Commentators..."
	- The Parliamentary Report on Lord Elgin's Marbles (printed in full, in two parts).
	- Description of the General Sea-bathing Infirmary.
	- Account of antient Carteia and its Remains.
	- On the Statues of Raving and Melancholy Madness by Cibber.

	- Poetry: "England," by Robert Southey; "The Skull and Custom House Officer. A true Story," by Miss [Anne] Porden; "The Praise of Pedestrianism"; a review of Lord Byron's Siege of Corinth; etc.
	- Obituaries, with Anecdotes, of remarkable Persons.
	- Plus foreign and domestic news, monthly meteorological tables, parliamentary debates, Prices of Stocks and Goods, Accounts of Theatrical Performances, Reviews and Extracts of Books recently published; and much, much more.
Binding with light rubbing, wear to the edges and extremities, front joint cracked and tender but holding; various degrees of spotting and offsetting to and from the plates, a few text leaves bumped at the lower fore-corners, otherwise the contents are very clean and sound, securely bound. Front paste-down with the original bookbinder's label ("Bound by J. Robertson, St. George's Place, Canterbury") and the modern bookplate of Marius Nielsen (engraved by Johannes Britze).
