Sphinx such as the one whose questions Oedipus answered. In these
Heidfeld means to hide the deepest meanings of his thought in a pleasing
and unusual way. The book as well is filled with Aphorisms and
apothegms, quotations from many languages, translated into Latin, in his
time the universal language. Originally published in 1600 under the
title: Sphinx philosophica, this is the last of eight editions printed in
his lifetime, here much revised and rewritten. He died in 1623.
Chapter XXX on music, which includes musical notation is an important

and Geometry in this encyclopedic work. At least five further

Second Edition [the first was published in 1692]. An edited English
translation was published later, as "An Experimental Confirmation of
Chymical Philosophy, treating of the Principles of the Chymists in the

"Pyrotechnical discourses." Kunckel was both a chemist

physician, from the Dutch town of Zierikzee believed in the humoral
nature of medicine. In this book he explains his diagnostic method
in which he determines the humoral composition of each person from their
visible qualities, and thus the diseases from which they are most likely
to suffer. Understanding humoral make up of a person also makes it
possible to understand his/her personality, drives and needs.

supporter of Newton's physical theories in France, was a proponent of
Newton's ideas about the shape of the earth. In 1735 France sent an
expedition to Peru under the leadership of La Condamine and another to
Lapland led by Maupertuis. The expeditions were to measure as
accurately as possible the length of a degree along the meridian of
longitude. If, indeed, the earth is flattened toward the poles, as Newton
had predicted, the degree of longitude should be longer in far northern
latitudes than near the equator. The measurements proved Newton's
theory correct. When he returned to France though welcomed by
Voltaire and Madame Du. Chatelet, there were few supporters of Newton's
theory and the official response was not very positive. Maupertuis'
voyage to Lapland began on 2 May 1736 and lasted over a year. .

England. With practical inferences. One of the most eminent naturalists
of his time, John Ray was also an influential philosopher and theologian.
He is often referred to as the father of natural history in Britain. He
believed that all of the fossils were once living creatures, and although
he never printed his belief, he believed [as shown in a letter to a
scientist friend] that Man's life on earth was not much longer than
scripture, and that other creatures much predated him in time! A major
major pre-Linnean naturalist, especially in his study of botany, unlike
Linnaeus began to use classification to address questions in physiology,
function, and behavior. He also did experimental work in embryology and
plant physiology; among other things, he proved that the wood of a living
tree conducts water. His researches received so much renown that Ray was
inducted into the newly-formed Royal Society of London, one of the
world's first scientific societies, in 1667. Ray classified plants by
overall morphology: the classification in his 1682 book Methodus
Plantarum Nova draws on flowers, seeds, fruits, and roots. Ray's plant
classification system was the first to divide flowering plants into
monocots and dicots. This method produced more "natural"
results than "artificial" systems based on one feature alone;
it expressed the similarities between species more fully. Ray's system
greatly influenced later botanists such as Jussieu and de Candolle, and
systems based on total morphology came to replace systems based on only

surround is a complex woodcut printed in black. The author, a
Dominican, theologist was born in Monopoli, close to Bari, and
dedicated this work to Alphonse of Aragon, duke of Calabria. It is
a treatise on demonology, astrology, divination, ghosts and
apparitions; it is devoted to the struggle between demons and the
human race and how angels, devils, the sun, moon and the planets affect

last printed leaf including the colophon. Early paste downs and EPs
using waste sheets from a red and black letter edition of the works of
Saint Bonaventura, probably an incunabulum. Original vellum
