      SIGNED and dated (in year of publication) on half title by Susanne M.
Low. "Birds of America" was published between 1827 and 1838, and contains
435 hand-colored prints illustrating every species of North American bird
known at that time. This is a remarkable study of that work, providing a
detailed description of each of the 435 original plates as well as their
original paintings, image dimensions, geographical distribution of each bird
pictured, history of the discovery of the species, and identification of all
the plants and animals in the engravings. Also lists each variant, error of
misidentification, and misnumbering. In short, here is every piece of
information known about each plate along with a photograph of each one. Also
includes three comprehensive indexes. A valuable reference for print
dealers, catalogers, print collectors, librarians, etc. Bound in tan cloth
over boards with gilt spine title and brown endpapers. Touch of fading to
cloth at extreme bottom edges of boards, shallow wrinkles at spine ends.
Prior owner gift inscription on half title. Jacket has a few shallow edge
