66540. Catich, Edward M. The origin of the serif. Davenport, Iowa,
The Catfish Press [1968]. Original quarter morocco and marbled paper
boards. Fine. One of 50 copies of the special edition, signed by Catich. In
fine publisher's box with a fine copy of Catich's "A brush- written Latin
alphabet of 23 letters" (Catfish Press, 1969). The Latin alphabet is also
signed by Catich and is one of "[f]ifty copies of this portfolio...made to
accompany a like number of specially bound volumes of Origin of the
Serif". $450.00
66541. Catich, Edward M. Reed, pen, & brush alphabets for writing and
lettering. Davenport, Iowa, The Catfish Press, St. Ambrose College
[1972]. Quarter cloth and marbled paper boards, printed paper label on the
front covers. 2 v. Fine, the marbled paper s particularly bright (unlike
other copies seen, the marbler used bright yellow in making the paper on
these volumes). V. 1 is text and v. 2 in a similar binding but larger
format is the portfolio of reproduced alphabets. Brief Oct 19 1974 t.l.s.
from the author laid-in (conveying the book and noting "I did the bindings
with my own marbelized paper"). Inscribed by the author on the second front
endpaper of volume one. $300.00
66542. Catich, Edward M. The Trajan inscription, an essay by Ed ward M.
Catich, together with an original rubbing from the inscription. Boston,
The Society of Printers, 1973. Original tan cloth, printed paper label on
the front cover. Fine. Edition of 230 copies (this copy not numbered). The
colophon indicate s that 130 of the 230 copies contain a section from a
rubbing of the Trajan Inscription. Inscribed by the author on the second
front endpaper: "to John & Jeanne Michael / with warmest regard / E
Catich". Laid in t.l.s. from Catich to "Dear John and Jeanne" indicating
that he "did a truly special job of snipping [the Trajan inscription
rubbings] in that I searched until I find [sic] your initials conjoined
from the Trajan inscription". He goes on to explain the "IM" and adds:.
"The rubbing you are getting is better than those I made for the Boston
Society of Printers. Their's [sic] was on thicker 100% rag paper and did
not record all the minutiae of the original inscription as your rubbing
does". Catich penned in a three line description of the rubbing on the
facing page and signed it 'E. Catich. Nov 27, 1973". $400.00
