Stansbury, Howard. "EXPLORATION AND SURVEY OF THE VALLEY OF THE GREAT SALT
LAKE OF UTAH, including a reconnaissance of a new route through the Rocky
Mountains" Washington; Robert Armstrong: 1853.

This important report was first published in 1852. Stansbury's trip to the
Salt Lake Valley of Utah provides us with a wonderful snapshot of this
beautiful country before the arrival of golf courses and Las Vegas; it is
also one of the few genuinely admiring accounts from a non-Mormon outsider
of the early days of the founding of Salt Lake City, which was at the time
but two years old. Stansbury includes a detailed description of Salt Lake
City, its inhabitants, layout and state, and takes time to refute the many
rumors then circulating of immorality and price-gouging.

Stansbury gives a detailed description of the Utah country and its
features, flora and fauna, and on the return trip they happened to
discover and describe a new overland route which was to be used by the
Union Pacific Railroad a few years later when the transcontinental
railroad came through. The beautiful tinted lithographic plates that
illustrate the landscapes are among the most evocative and accurate ever
done in terms of portraying the true beauty and nature of the countryside.

Hardcover. 6"x9", 495 pages plus 1 folding map, 34 tinted lithographic
plates (3 folding panoramas) of landscapes and Indians; 10 lithographed
plates of reptiles and insects, and 4 lithographed paleontological plates,
all as called for. Without the separately issued volume with two folding
maps. Original embossed cloth, spine sunned, spine head chipped; first
several pages with overcut corner from a fold-in at the printer; several
gathers unopened; some light toning and foxing throughout, and a little
soil, but overall a nice copy. [02769] $200.00
