Joseph Cundall was the first modern juvenile publisher. He not only, as did
Newberry, commissioned writers to produce new juvenile works for him, he
also commissioned artists to make illustrations to fit the text as well as
the adult taste of the time. As this was a time when Gothic tales and
poetry and folk tales were being studied and revived, he also was a pioneer
in this respect. But he also published the finest literature written for
children in his own time, both at home and abroad. He also put his
childrens' books into fine bindings. I usually have a few of his works on
hand. They tend towards rarity because they were properly used by children
and did not have huge press runs. So this group includes one I have not
seen before with illustrations which had a large influence on American
childrens' and adult book illustration, the Andersen with Graf Pocci's
cuts. Both J. G. Chapman of the Illuminated Bible and a Christmas Present
from Fairyland, and the Sculptor, William Walcutt whose bookish magnum opus
was an homage to Jenny Lind were heavily influenced by Pocci, probably
through this Cundall edition, as were a number of other American
illustrators who could be found using a "German Gothic"style on occasion,
like Thwaites, Stephens and later still, Thomas Nast.
