A pretty set of the last edition undertaken by Edward Christian,
who had succeeded Richard Burn as the editor of the 'Commentaries'
following Blackstone's death and who, by some decades, preceded
Maitland as Downing Professor of Law at Cambridge.

The effort which gained Blackstone admission to the Society of
Antiquaries, still of significant scholarly value, establishing the
textual basis for modern scholarship on Magna Carta and the first
to prove the original Charter to be that of King John.

The most sumptuous and elaborate of all the editions of the Lord
Campbell's 'Chief Justices', with many full-page plates, some in
color and others folding, providing us with an unbroken
biographical record from the Norman Conquest forward.

One of the five greatest English law books, a substantial folio,
here in an edition which Maitland praised, particularly for its

preface he discusses at length the ancient laws of England, seeking

general history of English law, with Runnington's notes and his
