used by Blackstone for his Vinerian lectures at Oxford, crafted
over many years as the first university lectures on English law.

The last edition undertaken by Edward Christian, who had succeeded
Richard Burn as the editor of the 'Commentaries' following
Blackstone's death and who, by some decades, preceded Maitland as
Downing Professor of Law at Cambridge; with the half title.

The last quarto edition printed at Oxford, whose press Blackstone
had done much to improve and reform, published in the year
Blackstone was knighted and became a justice of the Court of Common
Pleas.

One of the first truly modern legal treatises, a "classic [written
by] one of the great real property lawyers of [the 18th] century",
in Holdsworth's words, denominated by Plucknett "a really

First edition in English of a unique medieval law book, printed
from the one surviving manuscript and called by Plucknett
"certainly the most fantastic work in our legal literature".

The penultimate edition of the one work singled out by Holdsworth
to exemplify the expansion of conveyancing precedents as the 18th
century unfolded, extending them to stocks, bonds and annuities,
and geographically to Ireland and America.

A tribute to the talents of Henry Cockburn, who secured a Scotch
verdict for his client against charges that he had swindled an
estate from the weak-minded Mackenzie; with Cockburn's jury address
and the exchanges between counsel well-reported.
