A "Mixed Bag" of Hunting Books-


Carpenter, R.R.M. GAME TRAILS FROM ALASKA TO AFRICA. np.; privately
printed: 1938. Notes from the author in several other copies of this book
state that the printing was limited to 800 copies. An accomplished
gentleman traveler and hunter, "Ruly" Carpenter shot polar bears in the
Arctic, mountain lions in Arizona, jaguars in Mexico, big horns in
Wyoming, and antelope and lions in Africa. These entertaining
recollections are based on his diaries. He wrote several other books,
including "North American Big Game" (1939), "Game Trails in Idaho and
Alaska" (1940), and "My African Safari", for the Roycrofters in 1937.
Carpenter also bought the Philadelphia Phillies baseball club in 1943; his
grandson (Ruly III) finally sold the franchise in 1981, a year after it
won its only World Series. Hardcover. 6.5"x9", 180 pages, 25 b/w plates;
publisher's light green cloth with gilt spine title, inset burgundy and
gilt title on the front cover; light spine wear, small rub spot on front
title; a bit rubbed at the extremities, very small stain at the upper

Clark, Roland. GUNNER'S DAWN. New York; The Derrydale Press: 1937. Edition
limited to 950 copies. Roland Clark was one of the premier wildfowl artist
of the 20th century. This was his second book of gunning tales, coming
between "Stray Shots" and "Pot Luck". As John Holman writes in the
Introduction to "Pot Luck"- "As a teller of tales that grip the hearts of
men who go out in the early dawn and cast their decoys on rosy waters, or
tramp the frosty uplands, he is hard to surpass". Hardcover. 7.5"x10.25",
125 pages, an original signed etching as the frontispiece, plus 5 color
and 14 b/w plates; color plates with tissue guards; publisher's full,
gilt-ruled leather with a gilt duck emblem stamped on the front; covers
with minor wear, a little rubbing, abrasion, etc., gilt duck somewhat
rubbed. Contents with a bit of light spotting on the tissue guards and
very minorly on a few color plate margins. Bookplate on front pastedown
with minor offsetting on the ffe. [04841] $500.00

Edition limited to 460 copies. Roland Clark was one of the premier

Evans, George Bird (ed.). THE UPLAND GUNNER'S BOOK  AN ANTHOLOGY. Clinton;
The Amwell Press: 1979. One of 1000 copies printed for the National
Sporting Fraternity Ltd.; signed by the editor and illustrator. An
anthology of 28 prose pieces on upland gunning in America. The authors
include George Bird Evans, Nash Buckingham, Col. Harold P. Sheldon, and
many more. Williamson adds an introduction to each piece. Hardcover.
6"x9.5", 263 pages, color frontispiece, line illustrations by Tom
Hennessey. Brown leatherette with gilt hunting horn emblem on the cover

Higginson, A. Henry. TTY BACK. A HUNTSMAN'S REMINISCENCES. New York;
Huntington Press: 1931. Edition limited to 401 numbered, signed copies
(signed in the Introduction). Thirty-seven years' worth of hunting stories
by a noted American fox hunter who was a Master huntsman in England.
Higginson writes that the period spanned by his own career "has been a
memorable one in the history of foxhunting, the growth of the sport in
this country during that time almost unbelievable, and I have a feeling
that it may be interesting to some of the younger hunting men to hear
something of that period and of the men who dominated it". Higginson also
wrote "Letters from an Old Sportsman to a Young One". Hardcover. 7.5"x11",

Mackay, Malcolm S. COW RANGE AND HUNTING TRAIL. New York; G.P. Putnam's
Sons: 1925. A scarce Western hunting title -judging by the photographs the
author and his friends cut a swath through the Rockies. This copy is
inscribed by Mackay. Hardcover. 6"x9", 243 pages, b/w plates, including
several line illustrations by Charles M. Russell; light cover wear, one
plate detached, with soil and wear along the edge; one plate with a stain;
very short tear on title page base, rear hinge split. Inscribed by Mackay
to Livingston Ludlow Biddle, the poet and father of author Livingston

Markland, [George]. PTERYPLEGIA: THE ART OF SHOOTING FLYING. New York; The
Derrydale Press: 1931. Edition limited to 500 copies. A new edition of
what is probably the very first book devoted to the art of wing shooting,
presented as a humorous poem. The first edition appeared in 1727, several
year after George Markland's untimely death at the age of just 44. Two
subsequent editions followed in 1735 and 1767. Eugene Connett of the
Derrydale Press prepared this fourth edition with illustrations by Robert
Ball and an informative and enjoyable introduction by Col. H.P. Sheldon.
Hardcover. 7.5"x10.5", xv + 29 pages, line illustrations by Robert Ball.

O'Connor, Jack. HUNTING IN THE SOUTHWEST. New York; Alfred A. Knopf: 1945.
Originally published in 1939 as "Game in the Desert". "I have tried to
communicate some of the feeling I have about the creatures of the
Southwest... it is a book for the sportsman, for the man who likes to go
afield in the fall to harvest with gun and rifle his little share of the
annual crop of game, but whose interests are not confined wholly to the
hunting season. It is a book by a hunter for the man who likes to know
more about the game he hunts...". O'Connor covers mule and whitetail deer,
bighorn sheep, elk, antelope, javelina, wild turkey, quail, doves, bears,
jaguars, mountain lions, and coyotes. Hardcover. 6"x8.5", xviii + 279 + 2
pages, 1 color and 22 b/w plates, dj; publisher's burgundy cloth with gilt
spine title; jacket with minor soil and a triangular 3/4"x1" chip from the
top edge of the front panel; front pastedown with two pieces of tape

Rutledge, Archibald. AN AMERICAN HUNTER. New York; Frederick A. Stokes
Company: 1937. 2nd ptg. A prolific and acclaimed writer and seasoned
sportsman, Archibald Rutledge wrote 45 books, including his sporting
titles, was Poet Laureate of South Carolina and was awarded the John
Burroughs Medal for nature writing. This selection of hunting stories
includes material that first appeared in Field and Stream, Outdoor Life,
Harper's Magazine and Sports Afield. Hardcover. 6"x9", x + 461 pages, b/w
frontispiece and line illustrations by Lynn Bogue Hunt. Publisher's dark
blue cloth with paper spine and cover labels. Covers with light wear, a
few rubbed areas, frontis lightly spotted, text just a bit browned.

Shields, G.O. CRUISINGS IN THE CASCADES. A Narrative of Travel,
Exploration, Amateur Photography, Hunting and Fishing... Chicago & New
York; Rand, McNally & Company: 1889. First edition. The author of
"Rustlings in the Rockies", "Hunting in the Great West" and "The Battle of
the Big Hole" takes on the Cascades. The book includes "special chapters
on hunting the grizzly bear, the buffalo, elk, antelope, rocky mountain
goat, and deer; also on trouting in the Rocky Mountains; on a Montana
round-up; life among the cowboys, etc."

Hardcover. 6.5"x9", 339 pages, + 12 pages of advertisements for guns,
cameras and other outdoor gear; beautiful brown and gold pictorial covers,
illustrating an elk; a scuff to the rear cover, and a very small one to
the front, tips bumped, but the striking covers are essentially in
brilliant condition; contents clean and nice, the main fault in this copy
being the fact that some of the signatures are partially pulled. [01161]
