AXEL. Translated into English by H.P.R. Finberg with a Preface by William
Butler Yeats. London: Jarrolds Publishers. 1925. 

1st edition in English. Large octavo, original white buckram heavily
decorated in gilt with an intricate design by T. Sturge Moore on spine &
front cover, top edge gilt. One of 500 numbered copies signed by the
translator, this being copy number 70. Decorated woodcut frontispiece,
title page, half titles and other ornaments throughout the text. Printed on
heavy rag paper, a beautiful book. Sturge Moore's Greatest achievement in
book design and the first edition in English of this remarkable Symbolist
play, one of Yeat's favourite wortks and a major inspiration to his
writings. Some light bubling to cloth on the rear panel, some mild dust
soiling to the white cloth, mild bruising to the corners but overall a very
nice copy with a handsome bookplate on the front endpaper. The original
prospectus for the book is loosely laid in.
