[ROOSEVELT, Franklin Delano] HAWTHORNE, Nathaniel. THE
GOLDEN TOUCH. [Mount Vernon, NY]: Peter Pauper Press n.d..
First Edition. Quarto (7-1/4" x 10") bound in silk cloth
with a paper label on the spine and a circular decorative
paper device by the illustrator on the front cover. One of
385 copies printed with hand-set type, decorated and
illuminated in gold by Valenti Angelo. Franklin Delano
Roosevelt's copy with his large, dark, and bold SIGNATURE
"Franklin D. Roosevelt/1941" on the front endpaper below the
inscription to him by a member of his private secretarial
staff, Toinette Bachelder: "For the President with my
        best/wishes for a happy Christmas/Affectionately/Toi."
        Autographs  of FDR dated 1941 are obviously of some interest;
in this case his signature, though not dated to the day, was
most likely written on or just after Christmas Day, not much
more than two weeks after the Day of Infamy. Laid into the
book are the original Christmas gift tag inscribed, "For the
President/Affectionately Toi" and a note about the book by
noted bibliophile and former director of the Pierpont Morgan
Library Frederick B. Adams, Jr. on his stationery. Adams,
whose mother Ellen Walters Delano was FDR's first cousin,
notes Roosevelt's fondness for Peter Pauper Press books.
Also laid in is an index card bearing an inscription
presenting the book to Adams from John and Jo [Fleming].
