1.                  Classic American Law Dictionary
Bouvier, John [1787-1851]. A Law Dictionary, Adapted to the
Constitution and Laws of the United States of America, and of the
Several States of the American Union; with References to the Civil and
Other Systems of Foreign Law. Revised, Improved and Enlarged.
Philadelphia: Childs and Peterson, 1857. Two volumes. Octavo (6" x
10"). Contemporary sheep, red and black lettering pieces, blind frames
to boards. Moderate rubbing and a few scuffs with wear to corners and
spine ends, boards partially detached but secure. Early owner stamp to
front pastedown of each volume. Occasional light foxing, interiors
otherwise bright. A solid copy of an uncommon work. $750.
* Fifth edition. Includes preface to first edition and advertisements
for the third and fourth editions.  This classic American dictionary
went through fifteen editions during the nineteenth century, the final
appearing in 1886. "During his years of study [Bouvier] had discovered
the handicap under which the student and lawyer labored at that time
due to the lack of a dictionary containing legal information logically
and conveniently compiled. He began work on a great dictionary and
indefatigably applied himself to it, in spite of increasing
duties...Nevertheless, in 1839, he was able to give his completed
dictionary to fill the need of the profession. [In it] he sought to
cover all legal subjects and terms arising under such a title, giving
citations from federal and state courts.": Dictionary of American

annotations. Rubbed, joints partly cracked but firm. Signature on

* First edition. Mackenzie, who was king's advocate during the period
of the covenanting persecution, was an important figure in Scottish
legal history. Referred to by those he prosecuted as Bloody Mackenzie,
"his overbearing temper [was] partly accountable for his misuse of
legal forms; and his hatred of religious fanaticism verged on
fanaticism. But he was well equipped with common sense, and his
efforts to prevent the torture of witches are to his credit."

library. Joints cracked, but holding, foxed. Lacks portrait
frontispiece, still a sound copy. $200.
*First edition. Covers the period from 1619-1629. Palmer was the first
Attorney-General after the Restoration. Kent considered these reports
as a good authority. All editions of this book follow the same

Tomlins, Sir Thomas Edlyne [1762-1841]; [Jacob, Giles (1686-1744)].
The Law Dictionary, Defining and Interpreting the Terms or Words of
Art, and Explaining the Rise, Progress, and Present State of the
English Law; Defining or Interpreting the Terms or Words of Art; and
Comprising Copious Information on the Subjects of Law, Trade, and
Government. With Considerable Additions. London: Printed by Andrew
Strahan, 1809. Two volumes. Signature 5M in Volume II misbound after
signature 4M in Volume I. Quarto (8-1/4" x 10"). Contemporary calf,
raised bands, lettering pieces, blind-stamped frames to boards. A few
scuffs to boards, wear to corners, chipping to spine ends, joints and
front hinges cracked but secure. Early armorial bookplates to front
pastedowns. Clean tear to a leaf in Volume I, interiors notably fresh.
An appealing set. $900.
* Second Tomlins edition. Jacob's venerable dictionary was first
published in 1729 and is considered by many to be his masterpiece, one
that "constituted an entirely new departure in legal literature"
(Cowley). Tomlin's edition, first published in 1797, is a substantial
enlargement and revision. According to Marvin, this edition is the

* First edition. Covers the period from 1737-58. These reports are
said to have been carefully written out by Willes, with a view to
publication, and have always been regarded as highly authoritative.

* First edition in English, preceded by two editions in French. These
reports "...have always been esteemed as among the best of the older
books both for value of decision and essential accuracy of report."
