Greetings All,

For your consideration:
~
(No. 7362 ) Crook, William H[enry]. (Compiled and edited by Margarita
Spalding Gerry). THROUGH FIVE ADMINISTRATIONS: REMINISCENCES OF COLONEL
WILLIAM H. CROOK, BODY-GUARD TO PRESIDENT LINCOLN.
New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1910. First printing, Full cloth,
Octavo, [viii], 280 pages, black & white photographs, illus.. Very good.
Colonel Crook recalls presidents Lincoln, Johnson, Grant, Hayes,
Garfield, and Arthur. Perhaps of most interest are his anecdotes about
Lincoln, who he guarded from January 4, 1865 until the assassination on
April 14th of that year. Crook's recollections of Lincoln's mood and
prescient assassination comments on that fateful day have become legendary
and are often quoted by other historians despite their sometimes
questionable
accuracy. One of the best known of these, which instantly entered the
folklore of the Lincoln assassination, is Crook's story of Lincoln saying
"Good-bye, Crook" on the night of his murder. "It startled me," says Crook.
"As far as I remember he had never said anything but 'Good-night, Crook,'
before." MONAGHAN #1918. Bound in dark blue cloth over boards with gilt
stamped spine and upper board, top edge gilt. Tissue-guarded frontispiece
profile of Lincoln photographed by Matthew Brady. Some minor edge rubs,
slight bumps to lower fore corners. Occasional foxing. Hinges not cracked,
binding sound. Prior owner name pencilled at top of front free endpaper.
