Greetings All,
~
(No. 7508 ) Shaffer, Ellen. THE NUREMBERG CHRONICLE: A PICTORIAL WORLD
HISTORY FROM THE CREATION TO 1493.
Los Angeles: Dawson's Book Shop, 1950. Limited edition, Full cloth, Folio,
[xii], 61 pages, Black & white cuts, endpaper maps. Very good.
One of 300 copies of this "leaf book" printed by Saul & Lillian Marks
at the Palatin Press in Los Angeles. This copy not numbered. The leaf from
the Augsburg Latin Edition of the Chronicle pirated in 1497 which was
originally laid is unfortunately lacking. Still it is nice piece of printing
and fine monograph on one of history's most important books. Woodcuts are
reproduced from a first edition copy of the Chronicle. Shaffer includes a
comprehensive census of copies of the five editions of the Nuremberg
Chronicle in public and private hands in North America at the time. Bound in
turquoise cloth over boards with an old woodcut illustration of Nuremberg
wrapping around both boards. Minor extremity rubs, a few spots externally,
prior owner name penned neatly on verso of front free endpaper. Front
endpaper is just beginning to split at top 4", but binding remains strong.
