Denslow's Night Before Christmas; Moore, Clement, C. Illustrated By Denslow,
William Wallace, G.W. Dillingham, New York, 1902, first Edition:
Denslow's Night Before Christmas; introduction by Grace Duffie Boylan. One
of the first renditions of Moore's original poem to be published in color.
The most beloved of all Christmas tales, with the illustrations evoking
those wonderful childhood images. Original orange picture boards of St.
Nicholas in his sleigh, wrapped to rear board. Spine rebound in black cloth.
Mild rubbing of boards and edges, illustrated e.p.'s, inside hinge partial
cracking, random finger smudges. Illustrated e.p. Each page illustrated in
color 23 full page, large text illustrations and decorations, text hand
lettered. Beautiful vivid colors, tightly bound. First edition. Copyright
page illustrated, stating "Copyright by William Wallace Denslow 1902," above
inkwell illustration "Published September 1902".  A rare book to find, and a
treasure to have. Clement C. Moore [1779-1863]  American biblical scholar &
author; originally wrote  "A Visit From St. Nicholas" for his children in
1822. William Wallace Denslow (b. Philadelphia, 1856) was the first American
to create picture books in the tradition of English illustrators (Crane,
Greenaway and Caldecott). His family moved to Manhattan in 1860; early
1870s, Denslow studied art at Cooper Union Institute and the National
Academy of Design. W.W. Denslow, the biography by Douglas G. Greene and
Michael Patrick Hearn, states: the original to be bound in paper covered
boards, with a Denslow illustration in color extending over the front back
and spine. 1902, published by G.W. Dillingham, with an introduction by Grace
Duffie Boylan. All illustrations in color. 4to, Not paginated, 64 pp.

Pudd'nhead Wilson With a portrait of the author by James Mapes Dodge and Six
illustrations by Louis Loeb, Twain, Mark (Samuel L. Clemens), Chatto &
Windus, Piccadilly, London, 1894, First Edition:
Rred cloth edition BAL 3441; stamped with three characters from the novel,
gilt lettering to spine and illustration. Frontispiece and title page are
conjugates printed on coated paper, the book is otherwise printed on
uncoated wove paper. Six additional inserted plates. List of Mark Twain's
works to the verso of half title. Publishers catalog to rear dated September
1894. Corners rubbed, few spots, spine mildly faded, rubbed, few creases.
Spine worn, looks rebacked, rear hinge cloth split ,mildly frayed, few chips
to lower spine end, edge of rear hinge exposed where cloth is split. Hinges
reinforced. Two scuff marks to pastedown, previous owners name and partial
date. Brown 1 inch stain to half title, page 119 pale stain to lower edge,
page 151 short closed edge tear. All plates present, otherwise tight, clean
text. In archival brodart polyester wraps. sm 8 vo, 246 pp $155.00

Moffat, Yard and Company, N.. 1911, First Edition:
A scarce book of literature for children illustrated by Jessie Wilcox Smith.
Five beautiful glossy color plates (including frontispiece); children
experiencing each of the "five senses". Organized into five secitions which
contain stories, poetry and vignettes about each of the senses; by many well
known writers: Hans Christian Anderson; Robert Louis Stevenson; Charles
Kingsley; Angela M. Keyes; Dinah Maria Muloch; Oliver Herford. Along with
Old Tales; English Folk Tales; French and Eastern Folk tales. Tan cloth
boards and spine, stamped green lettering, illustration of children in
color, green lettering to spine. Spine ends bumped, 1 inch closed cloth tear
to upper front hinge, mild crease to rear board. Hinges not cracked, solidly
bound, clean bright text and illustrations. In protective brodart polyester
wraps. sm 8 vo, 252 pp. The "Forward" reads: Here is an easy book of Joyous
literature for the Children. It is full of good things. It will help not
only to quicken the Children's senses, but to broaden their sympathy and
enrich their culture. Best of all it will please them. Some of it may be

Little Leather breeches and Other Southern Rhymes, Wightman, Francis P.,
Collected and Arranged By, Illustrator, Francis P. Wightman; Published by
J.F. Taylor and Company, 1899, N.Y., First Edition:
Unique volume of Southern Literature; rhymes illustrated in color,
portraying white and black dialect of the Old South, and other misc.
stories; i.e. Johnnie going to the Circus tent with his Father and Uncle to
see the India-rubber man. But most are reflective of the South:  "Ol' Dan
Tuckuh was a fine ol' man, he used t' ride a Durham ram...";  "Oh! My little
boy, who made your breeches? Mammy cut 'em out, daddt sewed th'
stitches...";  " Fish! Fresh fish! Buy fish? W'en de win' blow Nort'...." to
illustrated a few; however there are diverse group of characters and
stories, from little children, to possum and smoking frogs. Many pages have
two vignettes.  Few rhymes have city and state of origination at the end,
not all Southern states.Well worn tan color picture boards in color, heavy
soil, although the board illustration is still bright and colorful, rubbing
to all edges. Few pages have short closed margin tears. Tan cloth spine,
ends frayed, 9 1/2 inch closed tear to cloth, few stains and finger markings
to e.p. Inscription "Master Hubert Miller Presented by Annie Long Xmas 1900.
Illustrations and lettering bright and clear, edge finger smudges, rear
f.e.p. missing. Rear board soiled, damp stain near spine. Text block solid,
boards shakey. In protective polyester wraps.First Edition. 4 to. $230.00

Billy Boy; A Study in Responsibilities; Long, John Luther; Illustrated By
Jessie Wilcox Smith, The Munson Book Co. Limited, 1906, First Edition:
 An insightful book of a Father who takes his young son to Sea Shore for the
summer; dedication "For Unwise Fathers As If From Their (Sometimes) Wise
Sons". Oval color frontispiece of boy at the sea, with 3 half tone plates by
Jessie Wilcox Smith. End papers and each page beautifully decorated in blue
with sea scenes, including title page, by  Robert McQuinn. TEG. Blue cloth
boards, bright gilt lettering to front and spine, oval inset in color, same
as frontispiece, dedcorations of sea gulls around frame of boy. Very mild
bumping of spine ends, all else fine, clean, tightly bound. . From the
author of Madam Butterfly, Miss Cherry-Blossom of Tokyo and many other
novels, works. First Edition (to Copyright page "Published September,
1906");  above first Copyright, 1905 by P.F. Collier & Son; 2nd by John
Luther Long, 1906. I think this first appeared as a serial in Collier
Magazine prior to book publishing. A fine clean book. $155.00
