GOLDSMITH, Oliver. THE DESERTED VILLAGE. (Campden,
Gloucestershire): (Essex House Press) (1904). First Edition.
Small octavo (4-3/4" x 7-3/8") bound by C. & C. McLeish in
full green and brown morocco consisting of matching front
and rear covers with three vertical brown panels with a
blindstamped tree design with black leaves and two central
vertical green panels with an outside border of green ruled
in gilt and with text from the poem in gilt filling the
borders, the text different on the rear. The spine has five
raised bands with gilt lettering and a gilt leaf design;
gilt dentelles. 22, [2] pages including color frontispiece
and caption title, with the original endpapers bound in.
Copy #33 of only 150, the entire edition, all printed on
vellum. Illuminated initials and illustrated with a color
frontispiece and tailpiece by C. R. Ashbee. C. & C. McLeish
was founded by Charles McLeish the Elder who previously was
a finisher for T. J. Cobden-Sanderson at the Doves Bindery
(1893-1909). Slight foxing to endpapers; one small rubbed
spot to head of spine. Fine copy in a magnificent custom
binding. $4500.00
