Cardozo, Benjamin N. [1870-1938]. The Growth of the Law. New Haven:
Yale University Press, 1924. 145 pp. Original cloth, some shelfwear,
binding slightly cocked. Bookseller ticket to front pastedown,
internally clean. A nice copy. $150.
* First edition, first printing. Intended as a supplement to The
Nature of the Judicial Process, this is the published version of a
series of lectures delivered at Yale Law School in 1924. "a scholarly
and stimulating little book.": H.F. Goodrich, Columbia Law Review

Philadelphie; et se trouve à Paris..., 1783. [ii], 540 pp. Collation:
x2; A-Z8; Aa-Kk8; Ll6. Octavo (4-3/4" x 7-3/4"). Early mottled calf,
rebacked with black label and green ink. Tiny number in red ink to top
of front pastedown, minor rubbing where a signature or bookplate may
have been removed. A very nice, tight fresh copy. $3,250.
* First French edition. Only 600 copies were printed of this, of which
100 were on large paper. "The French translation was made by the Duc
de la Rochefoucault, at Franklin's suggestion, with over fifty
footnotes by the latter, and shows on the title the United States seal
[eagle and stars and stripes], its first appearance in a book"
(Howes). Streeter notes, "Franklin's grand gesture in publishing and
distributing these constitutions about which there was an intense
interest and curiosity among statesmen, was one of his chief
achievements as propagandist for the new American republic." Streeter

[columns]. Two volumes in one, each with title page. Quarto (7-1/4" x
9-1/2") Contemporary quarter vellum over paper-covered boards, blacked
edges, faint hand-lettered title to spine. Some rubbing with wear to
corners, minor chipping to head of spine, front free endpaper lacking.
Attractive woodcut title pages with architectural borders, woodcut
head-pieces, tail-pieces and decorated initials. Front hinge cracked
but secure, small worm hole to margins of first few leaves with no
loss to text. Light foxing, interior otherwise clean. $750.
* The body of writings known as the Corpus Juris Civilis was
commissioned by the Emperor Justinian in 530 CE. Compiled in three
years under the direction of Tribonium, it was both a critical
restatement of earlier law and jurisprudential writings and a complete
collection of recent legislation. It is divided into four books, the
Institutes, Digest, Code and Novels. The Code contains the laws in
force during Justinian's reign. The Novels is an edition of laws
decreed by Justinian. Its subsequent influence on European
jurisprudence is difficult to underestimate.

London Institute of World Affairs, this is a detailed critical
analysis of the United Nation's charter and organization. The 90-page
(with index) supplement is titled Recent Trends in the Law of the
United Nation. "Whatever one may think about the spirit of this book,
one has to remember that a work of this magnitude, coming from such a
well-known author, cannot be disregarded by anyone interested in the

J. Ridgway, 1828. vi, 384 pp. Fold-out lithograph frontispiece with
images of plows. Octavo (6 x 9"). Contemporary paper boards, recently
rebacked with period printed spine labels, endpapers renewed. Light
rubbing to boards, some wear to board edges and corners. Several
unopened signatures, light foxing to a few leaves, interior otherwise
fresh. $250.
* First edition. "[T]he present volume is entirely an original work;
all the statements it contains being exclusively derived either from
actual observation, or from information obtained upon the spot, in
every county.... [It addresses a topic that is] sometimes found
wanting in what is most essential [in treatises upon the law of
landlord and tenant], namely, the customs of the respective counties;
which are frequently, like the customs of London amongst merchants,
recognised in courts of justice; and thus, so far as relates to the
districts where they respectively prevail, have all the force and
effect of the law of the land.": Introduction 1-2. The first six
chapters address the subject in general terms, the other chapters
discuss individual counties. A companion volume to this work was

6.             Montefiore's Fascinating Commercial Dictionary
Montefiore, Joshua [1762-1843]. A Commercial Dictionary: Containing
the Present State of the Mercantile Law, Practice and Custom. With
Very Considerable Additions Relative to the Laws, Usages, and Practice
of the United States. Philadelphia: Printed and Sold by James
Humphreys, 1804. Three volumes. Octavo (5-1/4" x 8-1/2"). Contemporary
tree calf, gilt spines with lettering pieces, gauffered board edges,
marbled endpapers. Negligible rubbing to boards, some wear and
chipping to spines, light rubbing to joints, board edges and corners.
Residue from bookplate to each front pastedown. Clean tear to a leaf
with no loss to text, occasional light foxing, interiors otherwise
fresh. A handsome copy of a very scarce title. $5,000.
* First American edition (1804), based on the 1803 London edition with
much new American material added. With a subscriber list that includes
Horace Binney, Alexander James Dallas, Peter S. Duponceau and William
Rawle. Intended for merchants, this dictionary is a very important
economic and legal source that offers a wealth of information about
contemporary commercial and maritime law, international business
practices and fascinating descriptions of commercial ports and their
primary imports and exports. Montefiore also discusses the present
state of banks and insurance companies in the United States, the laws
of copyright and letters patent, the regulation of coastal trade, the
funding system and state of the U.S. national debt and a very
interesting section on the production and qualities of Madeira wine.
Montefiore was an English solicitor who emigrated to the United States
after the War of 1812. He published several works on commercial law.

7.                 Sugden's Advice on Estates
Sugden, Edward Burtenshaw [1781-1875]. A Series of Letters to a Man of
Property on the Sale, Purchase, Lease, Settlement, and Devise of
Estates. Philadelphia: Published by Farrand and Nicholas, 1811. viii,
127 pp. Octavo (5-1/2" x 8-1/2"). Original marbled boards rebacked
with three-quarter calf with red lettering piece. Edges bumped; trace
of something removed from front pastedown, interior very fresh. A nice
copy. $325.
* First American edition. Sugden was a barrister of Lincoln's Inn and
Solicitor General. And as a member of Parliament, he was instrumental
in the passage of several acts dealing with estates, wills and trusts.
Sudgen outlines the purpose of this book in Letter I: "You complain to
me, dear sir, that, utterly ignorant of the law, you are constantly
compelled to exercise your own judgment on legal points. (...) You ask
me to remove the cause of your complaint. This I may undertake as a
friend, without any violation of professional etiquette; and I shall,
therefore, readily comply with your wishes. (...) This I shall do
concisely, and without encumbering you with many technical phrases"
