TABLE OF THE POST OFFICES OF THE UNITED STATES,
arranged by States and Counties; as they were October 1, 1830;
with a supplement, stating the offices established between the
1st October, 1830 and the First of April, 1831.
Also, an Index to the Whole.

Washington; printed by Duff Green: 1831.

Evidently the first edition of this useful survey; subsequent compilations
were issued over the next 20 years. In addition to the states there are
listings for the Florida, Arkansas and Michigan Territories. The listings
consist of every post office, the name of the Postmaster and the distances
to Washington and the state's capital city. The distances were important
because, as a table shows, postage rates were based on distance as well as
number sheets sent.

To send a letter composed of 2 sheets of paper over 400 miles cost 50
cents (in 1831 dollars). To put things in perspective, the Postmaster
General had only been made a member of the Cabinet in 1830 and the first
official national postage stamp would not be issued until 1847 (these were
the days of "postmaster's stamps").

Hardcover. 4"x7", vii + 359 pages; newly bound in handsome quarter
leather and marbled boards, new endpapers; contents a bit browned, a newer
ownership signature (ball point pen!) on the top margin of the title page.
[29408] $175.00
