Bryan, F.(Ferrebee) Catharine

AT THE GATES: Life Story of Matthew Tyson and Eliza Moring Yates of China.

Nashville, TN: Broadman Press, 1949.

Includes: Appendix: The Baptist Inheritance Chart; Chronology: Three
Parallel Histories Of The Yateses (sic), And Contemporaries, Of China;
two additional leaves of photos; Year By Year: A Synopsis For Each
Chapter; and the Index.

Picking up where Dr. Charles E. Taylor left off in the history of these
two well respected missionaries, the primary difference being that Bryan
includes the story of Eliza Moring Yates, a committed missionary who not
only worked with her husband in establishing the missionary presence in
China, but often took on his burden as well when he was suffering from
ill health.

Mr. Yates was accepted by the one-year-old Southern Baptist Convention's
Foreign Missionary Board as its first missionary to China, and North
Carolina's first foreign missionary. He served more than 40 years and
died in Shanghai, China, in 1888. In China, He served as an interpreter
for the U.S. Consulate during the U.S. Civil War when the church could
not send supporting funds. In 1884 he was offered the Presidency of Wake
Forest College, which he declined, the couple preferring to continue their
commitment to the Chinese Mission. The Eliza Yates Memorial School for
girls on Paoshing Road was founded by the Southern American Baptist Mission
in 1897 to honor Mrs. Yates work. Bryan begins with the birth of both
missionaries and follows through to their respective passing. The author
also wrote HIS GOLDEN YEARS, a life cycle of her father, Robert Thomas
Bryan, which she refers to as a sequel to this work - the two covering a
span of about 100 years of missionary work in China.

About Miss Bryan: Born in Chinkiang, China and educated in the U.S.,
she returned to China as the Assistant Headmistress of the Julia
MacKinzie High School for Girls, Yangchow, China in 1908. She remained
in China for over 30 years, following in the footsteps of the missionary
workers before her. Also by this author: THE CALL OF THE CROSS, A CYCLE OF
CHORALS, and THE CHILD IN THE CHURCH.
