1.  PLUCKNETT, Theodore F.T.  A Concise History of the Common Law.
The Lawyers Co-Operative Publishing Company, Rochester, 1929.

First edition of the work to become the classic early 20th century
introductory text to English law, written while Plucknett was at
Harvard where he collaborated with Pound, eminently readable and
still worth consulting.

2.  POLLOCK, Frederick and F.W. Maitland.  The History of English
Law, Before the Time of Edward I. Second Edition. Two Volumes.  At
the University Press, Cambridge, 1898.  Original cloth, showing

The first issuance of the second (and best) edition of a classic,
the 'opus mirabile' which remains the starting point in the study
of medieval English law, written largely by Maitland in his
luminous style.

Iustice Fitzherbert, and other old Writers of the Lawes of England

One of the first English legal treatises of substance to
concentrate on a discrete subject area of the law, in this case the
powers of the King upon such matters as marriage, wardship, idiots,
lunatics, escheats and wrecks, among other matters.

5.  RIDGES, Edward Wavell.  Constitutional Law of England.  Stevens
and Sons, Limited, London, 1905.  Maroon cloth, gilt, quite rubbed,
rear hinge cracking, private ownership stamp on title, else a clean

First edition of a successful work to be published for almost a
half-century through eight editions and called upon its appearance
"the book of the hour [upon] the two great issues" of England's
imperial federation, both political and commercial.

The finest continuing series devoted to English legal history
[through volume 112], complemented by five volumes of The Ames

The best early edition of Fleta, one of the few substantial
medieval English legal treatises, written in the late 13th century
and surviving in but a single manuscript; with Selden's masterly
dissertation "loaded . . . with his remarkable erudition.

Still the only edition of Selden's works, a fit tribute to the man
whose name Maitland chose to grace the Selden Society and whose
output (in Holdsworth's words) "astonished his own contemporaries
and astonishes us"; with the frontispiece.
