The “Hortus Sanitatis” (first edition: 1491) is one of the great early
natural history compilations conveying health & medicinal knowledge about plants,
animals, fish, birds, reptiles and stones. With over half of its woodcuts &
text related to plants & herbs, it is also considered one of the 3 great early
herbals, along with the Latin Herbarius (1484) and the German Herbarius or “Gart
Der Gesundheit” (1485). See Durling #2468; Sander 3470; Nissen BOTANISCHE
#2368.
