Adams, Mrs. Charles Francis.   Autograph Letter, signed. Four pages, Nov. 23, no year but 1868 or 9, to Thomas Dawes Eliot.   Henry Adams' mother writes a newsy letter to Congressman Eliot which includes her pleasure at seeing family and friends after seven years abroad and the current activities of Henry, Brooks, and Charles, Jr. One monogrammed sheet, folded to make four pages, then folded for mailing. Mounting stain along fold, a Very Good letter.    $100

Adams, Charles F. (Francis) and Edward Everett.   Farewell Address of Mr. Adams to His Constituents Upon His Acceptance of the Mission to England, and Speech of Mr. Everett at Roxbury, in Behalf of the Families of the Volunteers. London:  Henry Stevens, 1861.  First edition.  Original printed wrappers, 18 pp., Printed at the Chiswick Press.  Removed from a bound volume but a tall copy (8 3/8 inches).  The front cover reads "Mr. Adams and Mr. Everett on the Union and the Southern Rebellion".  An association copy, on the title:  "G. Ticknor Esq. with the kind regards of Edward Everett".  Ticknor had been Professor of Modern Languages at Harvard.  He is best known for his "History of Spanish Literature", 1849.  He traveled in Europe with Everett from 1815-19 when both were young men.  Charles Francis Adams, son of John Quincy Adams and father of Henry Adams, was in congress from Massachusetts when he was appointed Minister to England at the start of the Civil War.  Spine perished.  Three light pencillings on the wrappers:  "Dup. discard", "1861", and "458.7"; no other library markings.  A Very Good copy.    $250

 

Adams, Charles Francis.   Carte de visite.  Adams is about 55.  He was the son of John Quincy Adams and the father of Henry Adams.  Imprint of Charles D. Fredericks, New York.  A Fine copy.   $75

 

[Henry Adams}  The Kenyon Review  for Spring, 1980. Printed wrappers. R.P. Blackmur, an excerpt from his upcoming book Henry Adams. Blackmur died in 1964, his unfinished book was finally ready in 1980, edited by Veronica Makowsky. Also, James Dickey has a poem, "Purgation". Spine lightly sunned, a Fine copy.   $20

 

[Henry Adams]   "The Harmony of True Liberalism: Henry Adams' Mont-Saint Michel and Chartres" in The Sewanee Review  for Winter, 1952. By R.P. Blackmur, this is an excerpt from his "upcoming book on Henry Adams" which was unfinished 12 years later when Blackmur died and did not come out until 1980. Also, Irving Howe has written to the editor complaining about a bad review of his Sherwood Anderson. A Very Good copy.   $15
